Summer Treat from The Twice Baked Twins

It is finally starting to feel like summer! What better way to celebrate than to make a delicious and refreshing treat? The Twice Baked Twins joined us at last year’s main event with delicious desserts. We were also super excited to see this identical culinary duo at the Diabetes Research Institute’s “D.R.E.aM.S. in the City” event with a new diabetic delight! In addition to TV and newspaper features, Judy & Joy host a variety of different recipes on their website. My fave for the upcoming July 4th holiday? This no-bake, easy-to-make Chocolate Stout Shake. It is a combination of chocolate beer and vanilla ice cream. Beer and ice cream in one recipe? Who wouldn’t want to try this?

Chocolate Stout Shake
1/2 gallon of vanilla ice cream, softened
1/2 cup chocolate beer or stout beer (I used Imperial Choklat Stout)
1 cup milk
1/4 cup chocolate sauce
whipped cream for garnish
chocolate shavings for garnish
piroline cookies for garnish

Directions: Blend all ingredients together. Taste and add more beer or chocolate to your liking. Pour into a cold glass, top with whipped cream & chocolate shavings. I love the cookie straw!

How-To Video: Rainbow Cut-Off Shorts

This summer everyone is raving about denim cut-off shorts. Whether they are studded, spiked, destroyed, high-rise, mid-rise or low-rise, these shorts are a summer must-have. One of the most popular looks this season is the rainbow cut-offs. They are sold in almost every retail store but unfortunately can be a bit pricey. Well, today we are in luck! In this DIY video youtube fashion and beauty guru, Andrea shows us how to create rainbow cut-offs on a budget. All you need is an old pair of jeans, scissors, a bottle of bleach, and a tye-dye kit.

Welcoming Back DJ Nicky Sibilia

Fashion & Beauty Week is thrilled to have DJ Nicky Sibilia back on board for our upcoming events. As last year’s official DJ, he was a total crowd-pleaser, capturing the essence and inspiration behind each designer line. DJ Nicky is most known for DJing at the infamous Jersey Shore club The Headliner, attracting a 3,000+ Saturday night summer clientele. In addition to The Headliner, Nicky holds many residency and guest spots in nightlife hot spots including Hoboken’s Bahama Mamas, Clifton’s BLISS, Riverdale’s Club Vibe, and The Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. His accomplishments in DJing have taken him around the country, and we are confident that he will only become more successful in the years to come.

“You have to be able to read your crowd and adapt, music has changed, and diversity and reinvention are key elements in the music world.” – DJ Nicky

Monique Lhuillier Launches Resort 2013!

Monique Lhuillier was a fan favorite at FBW 2012 for her elegant gowns and effortlessly chic cocktail attire. After taking a trip to the dark side with her Fall collection, Monique decided to go for a more “fun, playful and modern” look for her Resort 2013 wear. This collection features a lot of neon colors including fuchsia, lime green, bright yellow, and electric orange. The pieces in include dresses that are either nipped at the waist or belted, tailored shorts, and trousers. Some of the items are simple with just a pop of color, while others are more voluminous, floral covered, and strewn with “drippy paint strokes”. Take a look!

New Developments from the DRI & Partners

The DRI recently teamed up with other leading scientists to explore new project development. By building tactical partnerships they will open the doors to new research and continue their efforts to cure diabetes.  Scientists from various locations came to Miami to share their ideas and findings. Some of the ideas presented include:

  •  Reactivating Insulin Producing Cells: Although it is said that people with type 1 diabetes do not have insulin-producing cells, it appears that they actually do have these cells, they just are not active. Dr . Bart Roep has developed methods to identify and study white blood cells that are involved in the destruction of the islets. The next step is creating a vaccine that specifically targets these cells.
  • Re-educating the Immune System with Stem Cells: Dr. Zhao has completed a study in Chinese patients with type 1 diabetes. Patients with type 1 diabetes were set up with a machine and infused with stem cells that showed an increase in insulin production in patients that were not producing any insulin prior to treatment.  Some believe that exposure of the patients’ white blood cells to the stem cells will “re-educate” the immune system and assist in regenerating insulin producing cells.
  • Learning From Cancer: Dr. Vincenzo Bronte, professor of immunology at the University of Verona in Italy, and his colleagues are examining different ways to remove Myeloid- derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in cancer patients in an attempt to destroy tumors.

New Addition: Social Media Intern, Jamila Omari

Hi everyone!

My name is Jamila Omari. I am so excited to be the new social media intern for Fashion & Beauty Week! I am a fashion studies major going into my senior year at Montclair State University. Fashion blogging has been something I have been doing as a hobby for the past four years, so being able to intern doing something that I have always had a passion for is great. I will be posting information about the next FBW event set for 2012/2013 as well as new product launches, DRI news, and even some cool trends for the spring/summer seasons! Although I will only be in the office over the course of the summer, I hope to be a part of the event as much as I can during the fall and winter seasons as well. It has been so much fun working with everyone and I look forward to the rest of my time with them!
