FBW Goes International With Anna!

Instead of a designer announcement, today we are giving you a sneak preview of one of our international media partners and designer recruiter, Anna Basak from Fashion Calgary. Last year we partnered with her and photographer Rafal Weigel to showcase Polish designer Teresa Rosati as our European pick. Anna was born and raised in Poland, where she grew up in a culture heavily focused upon the arts and fashion. After she met her husband Rafal, the two started this fabulous website. Fashion Calgary is a Canadian-based company with both national and international reach. It combines the social and cultural needs of residents and tourists by providing them with a wide range of exciting offerings from Calgary’s top four social entertainment areas and leading cosmopolitan businesses: Fashion, Beauty, Art & Design and Cuisine. The team at Fashion Calgary seeks to provide the best possible experience for their clients by giving them exclusive information about the city’s hot spots, prime locations and must-attend events in the city Calgary. They support designers, boutiques, art galleries, beauty salons and restaurants by bringing them into the spotlight as top-tier brands. Their mission is to promote local businesses,  achieve high-end exposure and bring Calgarians (both residents and visitors to their city) all the best that the city has to offer. Stay tuned in the next month for an announcement on this year’s featured international designer!

FBW 2013 Designer: Adrian Alicea

It’s been rumored 7 is a lucky number. Lucky for us, Adrian Alicea steals the spotlight as our 7th designer announcement!

Adrian Alicea started his career as a dancer who performed at various nightclubs.  At the age of 20 he was approached by Rae Dawn Chong at the famed NY nightclub, The Tunnel, about being a model for Thierry Mugler. Although his 6 ft. 3 in frame made him quite an imposing figure on the dance floor, Adrian never dreamed his looks and his height could translate into a modeling career. Never one to shy away from opportunity, Adrian modeled for Thierry Mugler for three years. He continued to dance every opportunity he could and from Mugler he transitioned on to touring as a featured dancer with Malcom McClaren, Willie Ninja and Grace Jones. As a model, he did campaigns and runways for Armani, Gautier, Gianfranco Ferre and Patricia Fields. In the late 90s, he met Nico Urquiza and the famed house of Nico & Adrian NY was born. Adrian worked with Nico for ten years to create a collection that featured “unique and outrageous designs and runway shows that were so scandalous in their sexiness that many of the world’s top models and fashion photographers came calling for collaborations.”

The designs of Nico & Adrian NY went on to be featured in many magazines covers and pages including Vogue and have been worn by celebrities such as Linda Evangelista, Omahyra, Daddy Yankee, Nick Cannon and Zoe Saldana. They also have an underwear line that is available in stores and online today.

For the past two years, Adrian has been focusing on his own line known as, Adrian Alicea Haute Couture.  Describing the line he said, “I make everything by hand. I love color. I love music. I love dance. I want my designs to make people happy, so each piece is unique. I put everything into my work – my heart, my soul, my love. I want everyone who wears my designs to feel special, to feel proud… to know they are different and that they have a right to be.”

The 6th designer that will be seen on the FBW 2013 runway is BCBG!

BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP was founded in 1989 by Designer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Max Azria. In 1981, after 11 years of designing a line of women’s wear in his native Paris, Azria moved to the United States and launched Jess, a series of new-concept retail boutiques that offered hip French fashion to American women. Named for the French phrase “bon chic, bon genre” (a Parisian slang meaning “good style, good attitude”), the brand embodies a true combination of European sophistication and American spirit. In 1991, Luboy Azria, Chief Creative Officer of BCBGMAXAZRIA and Max’s wife, joined the company as a designer and became the Creative Director in 1996. Currently, BCBG is recognized as one of America’s leading design houses with collections that include evening dresses, denim, outerwear, footwear, swimwear, handbags and small leather goods. Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Rachel Bilson, Eva Mendes list BCBGMAXAZRIA and Max Azria as staple items in their wardrobes.

We’re thrilled to announce the ultra-chic Jay Godfrey as the 5th designer in our 2013 runway line-up.

Jay Godfrey is a New-York Based Designer. He is inspired by the “chic New York woman” and aims to meld the “classic tailoring techniques of Savile Row with modern silhouettes and luxurious fabrics” that flatter the feminine figure. After he graduated, Godfrey worked for Citigroup on Wall Street and later attended Parsons School of Design.
